Aleksei I. Zygmont

Religionist, historian of philosophy, PhD in Philosophy.

Graduated from the Centre for the Study of Religions of the Russian State University for the Humanities and completed his postgraduate studies at the School of Philosophy of the Faculty of Humanities of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. He defended his dissertation at the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2018.

His previously held appointments as Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences of the RANEPA (2021-2022), Senior Scientific Editor, and then Chief Editor for Religious Studies of the Great Russian Encyclopedia (2019-2024).

Dr. Zygmont`s scholarly output includes more than 30 journal publications and the monograph “Holy Negativity: Violence and the Sacred in the Philosophy of Georges Bataille”. As a contributing editor to the Great Russian Encyclopedia, he authored more than 20 entries, including the key article 'The Sacred.'

He has served as Guest editor for several academic journals, including Logos; State, Religion and Church in Russia and Worldwide; and Studia Religiosa Rossica. He translated from French and English books written by René Girard, Mark Juergensmeyer, and Michel Meis. His research focuses on religion and violence, martyrdom, theory of the sacred, French philosophy of the 20th century, and contemporary Russian religious studies.
