Она представляет собой компиляцию предыдущих исследований Гудвина, которые сформировали основу мультимодального анализа. Человеческое действие строится путем активного комбинирования материалов с различными свойствами в ситуированных контекстуальных конфигурациях, где они могут взаимно уточнять друг друга, создавая целое, которое одновременно отличается от составляющих его частей и превосходит их. Это имеет ряд последствий для организации языка, действия, знания и воплощения в ситуативном взаимодействии. В данной статье будут рассмотрены два феномена, которые зависят от такой распределенной организации действия. Во-первых, будет рассмотрен Чил, человек, получивший серьезное повреждение левого полушария мозга, в результате чего его словарный запас оказался ограничен тремя словами — «да», «нет» и «и», — который тем не менее был способен действовать в качестве эффективного говорящего в разговоре. Он делал это, оперируя речью других людей так, чтобы побуждать их произносить слова, которые были нужны ему, но которые он не мог произнести сам, а также используя жесты, чтобы включать значимые феномены окружающей его среды в организацию своего высказывания. Во-вторых, будут исследованы процессы, посредством которых археологи приобретают способность видеть релевантную структуру в раскапываемом ими грунте и создавать документы, такие как карты, которые оживляют дискурс их профессии. Способ выстраивания действия посредством одновременного использования материалов с различными свойствами позволяет опытным археологам калибровать профессиональное зрение, практику и воплощенные знания новичков и тем самым интеракционно конструировать в рамках ситуативного взаимодействия познание, способы видения и воплощенные практики новых археологов.
