The article describes a unique case of Kanonersky island of Saint- Petersburg. Its citizens represent a local community, characterized by rigid territorial identity. Despite of its prime location to the Gulf of Finland and historical centre of the city, the island is often described as urban periphery. The author refers to the method of discourse analysis to describe which urban publics are struggling for determining the place of the island in the structure of urban space of Saint-Petersburg, and why they hold a particular position.
